Patient Safety: Opioids looks at the history and rise of opioid prescriptions in the United States. This course also providesan overview on opioids, pre and post surgical therapy and pain control, benefits of opioid in post surgery, how to tackle the epidemic, and finally identifying drug seeking behaviors.

Intended Audience
This educational activity is intended for all healthcare professionals including plastic surgery practitioners, residents, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to do the following:

  1. Identify benefits and challenges of opioids use
  2. Describe the pre-surgical and post-operative consults
  3. Educate others about opioid over-use post-surgery
  4. Familiarize yourself with current legislation regarding opioid prescriptions
  5. Bring opioid awareness to medical schools and other educational institutions
  6. Identify other alternatives to opioids for patient pain management
  7. Collaborate with other medical specialists
